A native of Virginia, Dr. Blum studied Biology at the University of Virginia and received his doctorate in the History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Notre Dame. A devoted student of Blessed John Henry Newman, he has found joy in teaching some of the liberal arts marked out by Newman as particularly suited for the inculcation of discipline of mind, especially geometry and logic. At Thomas More he has been especially blessed by the opportunity to teach the course in Natural History, which has helped him to appreciate the understated loveliness of the New England landscape. Dr. Blum’s writings have grown from his reflection upon the tasks of teaching history and philosophy. He has published two volumes of translations from the French and a number of essays on topics of catholic interest, from the medieval abbey church at Vezelay to Euclid’s treatment of ratio and proportion. To read the works of Aristotle and Aquinas is his idea of leisure; the plays of Racine and the novels of Austen are sheer delight. Dr. Blum and his family live in a small town in northern Massachusetts where they enjoy the modest pleasures of an old house, a small garden, a large dog, a warm woodstove, and visits from family and friends.
