Sixth Week in Ordinary Time
Genesis 11: 1-9
Mark 8: 34-9: 1

Tempted again by arrogance and pride, the Chosen People decided, as the text reads:…”to make a name for themselves…”They were not satisfied with being God’s Chosen People.

And so God punishes them for building the Tower by confusing their language and allowing it to become simply “babel.” Yet, even under these circumstances, God does not stop loving His People. And He reveals this love by sending His Son to bring about redemption.

And herein lies the lesson to which I referred yesterday. Namely, that this redemption will come about by means of the Cross, mentioned by Christ in the in the Gospel of today’s Mass.

For Jesus, He will suffer death upon it; for us, we must carry it daily.

Keeping in mind that the Liturgical Season of Lent is approaching, we recall the well-known Versiele and Response which the Church places upon our lips at that time:

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee;

Px. Because by Thy Holy Cross, Though hast redeemed the world.

Amen.
