Profile

Biography

The St. John Henry Newman Chair in Catholic Studies for the 2022–2023 academic year is Joseph Pearce, an internationally acclaimed author, tutor, teacher, and public speaker.

Originally from London, England, Mr. Pearce was once involved in radical politics. An agnostic, rebel, and risk-taker, Mr. Pearce’s political daring found him in a tight spot more than once. Several years later, after coming upon the works of G. K. Chesterton, Mr. Pearce had a deep spiritual conversion. He was received into the Catholic Church in 1989.

Since then, Mr. Pearce has written bestselling books on G. K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis, Hilaire Belloc, J. R.R. Tolkien, Shakespeare, and others. He has authored more than a dozen books, all of which correspond to the Catholic intellectual tradition while exploring the vivacity of a life of faith. Some of his best-selling works include The Quest for Shakespeare, Tolkien: Man and Myth, The Unmasking of Oscar Wilde, C. S. Lewis and The Catholic Church, Literary Converts, Wisdom and Innocence: A Life of G.K. Chesterton, Solzhenitsyn: A Soul in Exile and Old Thunder: A Life of Hilaire Belloc. In addition to publishing, Mr. Pearce has hosted two thirteen-part television series for EWTN on Shakespeare’s Catholicism and has also written and presented documentaries on the Catholicism of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

Mr. Pearce is the Director of Book Publishing at the Augustine Institute. He is editor of the Ignatius Critical Editions series, which focuses on traditional readings of the classics of world literature, as well as of the St. Austin Review. He is also a senior contributor at the Imaginative Conservative.
